Arrive at Entebbe International Airport — Uganda's gateway city on the shores of Lake Victoria. Scenic overland transfer to Bwindi (approximately 8 hours through the Ugandan highlands — or opt for a 1-hour charter flight). En route, stop at the equator monument for photos and a crater lake viewpoint. Arrive Bwindi in the late afternoon, briefing from your ranger guide, and early dinner in preparation for tomorrow's trek.
The day you will never forget. Rise early and gather at the ranger station for a briefing. Groups of maximum 8 people set off with armed rangers and expert trackers into the dense montane forest. The trek can range from 1–6 hours depending on gorilla family movement (trackers radio ahead). When you find the family — and you will — the one-hour "visit" begins: sit quietly within 7 metres of a 200kg silverback, watch mothers groom infants, juveniles play-fight, and the family move through the forest together. This is not a zoo or a performance — it is one wild species choosing to tolerate the presence of another. You may weep. Many people do. Afternoon: rest, reflect, and journal at the lodge.
Morning guided forest walk through Bwindi — home to over 120 mammal species and 350+ bird species. Spot forest elephants, l'Hoest's monkeys, African green broadbill, and dozens of rare butterfly species. Afternoon: visit a Batwa pygmy community — the original indigenous people of Bwindi who lived in this forest for millennia before conservation-driven relocation. Arrive and transfer to Kampala for an afternoon city tour — the historic Kasubi Tombs (UNESCO), Gaddafi National Mosque (panoramic city views from the minaret), and the vibrant Owino Market. Evening dinner in Kampala's growing restaurant scene — one of East Africa's most underrated food cities.
Drive north to Uganda's largest national park (6 hours or 1-hour charter flight). Afternoon game drive on the northern bank — lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, leopard. The day that changes you. Briefing at 7am at the park headquarters, then set off into the Virunga volcanic forest with your ranger team. Rwanda's gorilla families are incredibly well-habituated — some groups are found within 30 minutes, others require a 3-hour forest climb. When you reach the family, one hour in their presence: watch the silverback assert his authority with a chest-beat display, observe mothers nursing tiny infants, watch juveniles tumble and wrestle through the undergrowth. The most intimate wildlife encounter on earth, and one of the most important conservation success stories of the 20th century. Afternoon: visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund research station and grave site at Karisoke.
Morning drive back to Kigali. Depending on flight time, visit the Presidential Palace Museum or the vibrant Nyamirambo neighbourhood for coffee and crafts. Depart from Kigali International Airport — Rwanda is the most remarkable country in Africa. You'll be back.

Fly into Zanzibar Abeid Amani Karume International Airport. Transfer to Stone Town — the UNESCO-listed historic capital, a labyrinthine maze of carved wooden doors, mosques, Hindu temples, and Arabic mansions that tell 1,000 years of Swahili trading history. Afternoon guided walking tour with a local historian through the narrow lanes, visiting the Old Fort, Anglican Cathedral (built on the former slave market site), and House of Wonders.
